I'm the kind of person who hates to apologize. Usually, I'm upset and feel that the other person did something wrong in some way - that I'm not being heard and shouldn't say sorry. The other thing I hate is being taken advantage of. In some situations, if you're the first person to say sorry, you're the person who gets blamed. It's an awful thing when everyone played their part.

Each of those situations needs to be dealt with differently, but where it makes sense, throw away your pride:

I just apologized to a programmer who I accidentally made upset. I feel like what he was trying to do was wrong, and also that he took my comments very personally as opposed to technically. Whatever the case, I told him sorry. It was a very light apology, but it's better than holding anger in just because I was misunderstood.

At the very least, find a way to apologize for the misunderstanding.

Then talk things out.
